Free-agent guard Moriah Jefferson is signing with the Phoenix Mercury, according to multiple reports Monday. Here’s what you need to know:

  • Jefferson, 28, averaged 10.8 points, 2.5 rebounds and 4.9 assists last season in 30 games with the Minnesota Lynx after being waived by the Dallas Wings after their season opener. She’s a career 44.4 percent shooter from the field and shot 46.8 percent from 3-point range over the last two years.
  • The No. 2 pick in the 2016 WNBA Draft, Jefferson spent the first three seasons of her career with the San Antonio Stars/Las Vegas Aces. She spent the next two seasons with Dallas.
  • The Mercury went 15-21 last season, their first under coach Vanessa Nygaard, and lost to the Aces in the first round of the playoffs.

Why did the Mercury go after Jefferson?

Jefferson had a rough go with knee injuries to start her WNBA career. Multiple surgeries and rehab forced her to miss 78 of 124 games from 2017-2020, severely halting the momentum of her all-rookie campaign in 2016.
