France midfielder Amandine Henry has been ruled out of the 2023 Women’s World Cup with a calf injury.
Defender Aissatou Tounkara has been called up to the France squad in Henry’s place.
The 33-year-old Angel City midfielder underwent medical tests on Friday and these showed an injury to her left calf that would prevent her from competing in this summer’s tournament, which gets underway on July 20.
Henry was not included in France’s matchday squad for Thursday’s friendly victory over Ireland and manager Herve Renard confirmed at full-time that she would undergo an MRI scan to determine whether she would be fit for the World Cup.
She had been recalled to the squad ahead of the World Cup by new manager Renard for the first time since December 2020.
Henry has been capped 93 times by France and is a seven-time Champions League winner with Lyon. She completed a move to Angel City in June.
Henry’s replacement Tounkara was most recently at Manchester United before he contract expired this summer. The 28-year-old has been capped 39 times by France and was part of the squad at the 2019 World Cup.
France begin their World Cup campaign against Jamaica on July 23 and will also play Panama and Brazil in the group stages.
