The Minnesota Vikings lost one of their own on Thursday afternoon as former player and head coach Monte Kiffin at 84 years old.
Monte Kiffin, 84, peacefully passed away today in Oxford surrounded by family and friends. As his grandson Knox said, he’s free of pain and smiling down on us from above.

Kiffin played for the Minnesota Vikings in 1964 and then went and played for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in 1965 when Bud Grant was the head coach. Kiffin didn’t coach for Grant however, but was the linebackers coach from both 1986-1989 and 1992-1994 while being the defensive coordinator in 1991.
Kiffin is widely known for his success with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as defensive coordinator running the Tampa-2 defense he and Tony Dungy made famous.
After a 13 year stint with the Buccaneers, Kiffin went to work with his son Lane at Tennessee, USC, Florida Atlantic and Ole Miss with the latter being a player assistant from 2020-2023.
Monte is survived by his sons Lane and Chris, daughter Heidi and wife Robin.
