Date:

Former Arsenal chairman Sir Chips Keswick has died aged 84.

A lifelong Arsenal supporter, Keswick joined the club’s board in 2005 before succeeding Peter Hill-Wood as chairman in June 2013.

He went on to serve in the role for seven seasons, a successful period on the pitch that included FA Cup wins in 2017 and 2020 and regular qualification for and participation in the Champions League.

Arsenal said Keswick “very much lived the values of Arsenal Football Club” during his 15 years at the club and was “a clear-thinking, popular and influential presence in the boardroom”.

“Sir Chips will be greatly missed by everyone at Arsenal who knew him,” the club said in a statement.

Outside of football, Keswick was a senior figure in the banking industry and was chairman of Hambros Bank and also a director of the Bank of England.

He was also an avid racing fan and was a respected owner of numerous racehorses.

He is survived by wife Lady Sarah and their children David, Tobias and Adam.
