High of the Week

This week, there was some exciting news: a new Women’s World Seven Football league was announced. The first event is set to take place in Portugal on May 21-23 ahead of the UEFA Champions League Final. They will have a players advisory council that includes Tobin Heath and Kelley O’Hara. The eight clubs that will be participating have yet to be announced. The event will also be streaming live on DAZN.

The game will be played in a 7-v-7 format on a field that’s half the size of a regular soccer field and consist of two 15-minute halves. If needed they’ll have extra time as a tiebreaker. The tournament will have a $5 million prize pool for each event. It’s backed by Jennifer Mackesy who is a co-owner of NJ/NY Gotham FC.

They plan to have another event at some point in 2025 and they plan to have future events in the United States, Mexico, Asia, and Europe.

It’s a way to grow the game of women’s soccer, and it should be an entertaining tournament that we look forward to watching.
