Footballers, rape accusations and social media: Effects of anonymity breaches for players and victims

Atletico Madrid forward Memphis Depay took to social media in July to vent his anger about the treatment of Benjamin Mendy.

It started with: “Who’s going to be Responsable for the damage on he’s name? (sic),” but the extended version on Instagram ended on: “Who’s F****** defending us athletes? Where are the big cooperations at when we need them?”.

Mendy, the former Manchester City player who now plays in his native France with Lorient, had been the subject of a two-year rape investigation. A three-week trial at Chester Crown Court found him not guilty of one count of rape and another of attempted rape, meaning he was found not guilty of all sexual offence allegations made against him by six different women.

Depay’s post was striking because not only did his scathing words encourage attention towards the anonymous complainants, it also took aim at the supposed lack of protection offered by social media companies.
