The Women’s College World Series is heating up as the annual NCAA softball tournament heads into its first weekend.
Saturday’s two-game slate features four of the top six teams, looking to avoid their first loss of the tournament. The late fixture is (4) Florida vs. (1) Texas which starts at 7 p.m. on Saturday, June 1 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.
Texas (53-8) doesn’t have many flaws. Of the team’s qualified hitters, the Longhorns have two players with at least a .400 batting average and seven more over the .340-mark. Eight players have at least a 1.000 OPS on the season.
Reese Atwood has starred for the Longhorns in her sophomore season. She’s leading the team with a .430 batting average, 1.396 OPS, 77 hits, 23 home runs, 90 RBIs and .894 slugging.
Her 23 home runs is fifth in the nation and 90 RBIs ranks first.
Texas also has a trio of excellent pitchers Citlaly Gutierrez, Mac Morgan and Teagan Kavan.
For Florida (52-13), the Korbe Otis and Skylar Wallace have dominated this year. Both players have over a 1.300 OPS and .400 batting average. That’s not to say the rest of the team is leaning on them, though.
Four other hitters are over the .300-mark, and Jocelyn Erickson is second in the country with 80 RBIs.
