The FIFA council approved a new plan for the Women’s Club World Cup on Wednesday, including moving the start from 2026 to 2028.
The Athletic reported the proposed move of the 16-team tournament earlier this week and as well as the confirmation, FIFA has also introduced a new annual tournament, the Champions Cup, which will include only the six confederation club champions as part of a smaller format.

Since its proposal, the addition of a Women’s Club World Cup has raised questions about calendar congestion and player workload — especially for top players who feature for high-performing club teams and their international teams. “The players are getting squeezed,” NWSL commissioner Jessica Berman told The Athletic last year.

At the same time, FIFA is working with a vastly disparate landscape. The majority of players in the women’s game are not playing enough games and outside of a handful of top leagues, the club game needs increased commercial development.
