NCAA women’s basketball national champion Angel Reese is headlining Team USA’s roster of 12 heading to Mexico for the 17th annual FIBA Women’s AmeriCup.
From July 1-5, Reese will be a part of Team USA’s efforts to advance into the knockout stage, where they’ll fight to bring home a fifth gold medal in the tournament. The U.S. has only participated in the AmeriCup six times in 16 tournaments, bringing home gold in four of them, silver in 1997 and just missing the medal mark with a fourth-place finish in the inaugural year, 1989.
Only Canada has competed every since year since 1989, collecting three gold, two silver and seven bronze medals.
In 2021, when the tournament was in Puerto Rico, Rhyne Howard joined Elissa Cunane as two members of Team USA on the All-Tournament team. Howard, the 2022 WNBA Rookie of the Year, also earned the tournament’s MVP award. Eventually, Howard was selected first overall in the 2022 WNBA Draft by Atlanta, while Cunane was taken in the second round by Seattle.
