With his run in Miami, 21-year-old Jannik Sinner became the first Italian to make the final of the Masters 1000 in 37 years. The seven-time ATP winner got there by defeating some of the biggest names in the game currently, including higher ranked Andre Rublev and world No.
21 Grigor Dimitrov, who has been exhibiting an improved form lately. Most impressively, Sinner evened up his head-to-head with tennis sensation Carlos Alcaraz, in a tense three-set semi-final, on the surface where the Spaniard usually holds the advantage.
The win over the reigning U.S. Open champion was a hard-fought victory that signaled a new kind of focus for Sinner and avenged his recent loss to the world No. 2 from Indian Wells. “For sure it’s one of the best wins. Obviously, it was a very tough match.
I think we both played a very, very high-level match,” Sinner, said after defeating Alcaraz in Miami. The match between the two young players is just the latest evidence of a developing rivalry that is igniting the tennis world.
Their semi also provided one of the best points of the year.
