Former two-time Grand Slam finalist Todd Martin paid ultimate respect and appreciation to Serena Williams, stating that the American tennis icon’s story is “made for movies.” When Williams was making her first tennis steps in Compton, she wasn’t really from a rich family and she faced many obstacles.
In one of her interviews, Williams revealed that she and her family lived in a two-bedroom house in Compton but that her parents never made her feel broke. Despite all the challenges and obstacles that Williams faced, she was able to come out on top – become a pro tennis player – and ultimately become one of the greatest players in tennis history and also one of the most influential athletes in sports history.
Today, Williams is widely praised and recognized by fellow Black players, who credit the former 23-time Grand Slam champion for making them believe they could become pro tennis players and enjoy the biggest success in the game.
