Malawi international Temwa Chawinga has been breaking records and making headlines for fun during most of her career. That stellar form has continued throughout her maiden NWSL season. The 26-year-old is now the only player to ever score against every active rival team in a singular NWSL season in the history of the league.
Chawinga has also broken Sam Kerr’s longstanding record for most goals in a singular NWSL season, which previously stood at 18. The Tumbuka native has already bagged 20 goals this campaign.
Kansas City Current are now in the thick of the NWSL play-off season after beating rivals San Diego Wave 4-1. Chawinga scored in the 54th minute and is showing absolutely no signs of slowing down her goal-scoring record. The Malawi captain is currently sitting atop of the NWSL Golden Boot race with 20 goals. Barbra Banda, representing Orlando Pride, is the closest player to Chawinga’s form but incredibly sits seven goals behind on 13.
It’s not an unusual thing for Chawinga to break longstanding records when it comes to goalscoring. In 2023, the Malawian star was the first non-European player to end the year as the leading female goalscorer of the calendar year, with 63 goals in all competitions.
