England’s Lauren James sent off against Nigeria after ref overturns yellow card

Date:

Lauren James was sent off for England during the second half of their Women’s World Cup last-16 match against Nigeria.

The offence means James, 21, will definitely be suspended should England progress to the quarter-finals of the tournament.

James was initially shown a yellow card by Argentinian referee Melissa Borjas for an altercation with Nigeria’s Michelle Alozie, in which she appeared to stamp on the player in the 84th minute.

Borjas then used the pitchside monitor to review the incident and changed her decision to a red card for violent conduct.

The incident happened with the game goalless and heading towards extra time.
