Jess Carter isn’t one to chase the limelight. It took a prod from her sister for the Chelsea defender to appear in Vogue magazine earlier this year.
“My sister, Mia, made me do Vogue because she’s the one that’s girly and into her fashion,” she says, “and she was like, ‘You’re not coming to see your nephew. You’re going to do this shoot!’.
“I wouldn’t say I take the opportunities for granted — that’s not the case at all. I’m not just really aware of the magnitude of things at times because I’m just like, ‘Oh, I’m just Jess, just playing football’.
“There have been some incredible opportunities that have come up that I maybe haven’t noticed are incredible opportunities.
“After this tournament, I have to take a step back and make sure I’m able to reflect on this moment.”
Carter, 25, is only one of two Lionesses with a mixed-race heritage in the World Cup squad, something she wants to see changed.
Following the semi-final win over Australia on Wednesday, England’s Twitter account posted, “What a team”, with a photo of the entire squad bar the only two mixed-race players: Lauren James and Carter.
