England’s ‘Finalissima’ win over Brazil a great learning experience ahead of World Cup – Sarina Wiegman

England manager Sarina Wiegman says that her side’s victory over Brazil in the first-ever women’s ‘Finalissima’ was a great learning experience in preparation for the World Cup this summer. 

England beat Brazil 4-2 in a penalty shootout following a 1-1 draw in normal time. 

The victory means England have now gone 30 games unbeaten and Wiegman admits that it is a privilege to manage the team. 

She said to ITV Sport: “An incredible atmosphere again. That will never be normal for me. I think it was a great game, two different phases, first half and second half.

“Great learning. Lots of learning from us in preparation for the World Cup.

“The learning thing is nice but we really wanted to win this one too.

“I feel privileged. I’m very happy working here. Such an incredible group. The team is so committed, they want to learn every day.”

Ella Toone opened the scoring in the 23rd minute following a cut-back from Lucy Bronze that wrapped up a well-worked move.

There was eventual drama towards the end of the game when Roma’s Andressa Alves scored in the 93rd minute to equalise for Brazil with a cool finish after goalkeeper Mary Earps spilled the ball from a cross. 

With no extra-time, the match went straight to a penalty shootout at Wembley Stadium.
