England win first women’s ‘Finalissima’ after beating Brazil on penalties

Date:

England beat Brazil in a penalty shootout after a 1-1 draw to win the first women’s ‘Finalissima’.

Manchester United’s Ella Toone opened the scoring in the 23rd minute following a cut-back from Lucy Bronze that wrapped up a well-worked goal by Sarina Wiegman’s team.

Brazil then came out as the stronger side during the second period despite having 36 per cent of possession and created a handful of opportunities.

With England hanging on, there was eventual drama towards the end of the game when Roma’s Andressa Alves scored in the 93rd minute with a cool finish after goalkeeper Mary Earps spilled the ball inside her box.

With no extra-time, the match went straight to a penalty shootout at Wembley Stadium.

England got off to a good start after Georgia Stanway converted the first spot-kick, but were dealt a blow when Toone saw her effort saved by Lele.

Earps then saved brilliantly from left-back Tamires before Arsenal’s Rafaelle gave England the advantage after smashing the crossbar.

Manchester City’s Chloe Kelly stepped up to score England’s winning goal, beating Brazil 4-2 on penalties to win the game.

England Women have now gone 30 games unbeaten and are next in action on Tuesday when they play Australia at the Gtech Community Stadium.
