England launch new kit for Women’s World Cup with white shorts dropped

England Women will not wear white shorts as part of their new home kit for this summer’s World Cup.

Players had previously raised concerns about the practicality of wearing white shorts while on their period.

Beth Mead, the top scorer and player of the tournament at last summer’s Euros, said during that competition that the England squad had given feedback to kit manufacturer Nike over the issue, telling the media that “sometimes it’s not practical when it’s the time of the month”. The kit with white shorts remained during the Euros, however, and was used up until the Arnold Clark Cup in February.

England’s new home kit will contain blue shorts and will be debuted on Thursday when Sarina Wiegman’s side face Brazil in the Finalissima at Wembley Stadium.

The new home shirt contains accents of the same ‘gym blue’ on the collar and the sleeves, while the away shirt is also blue with geometric patterns. The FA says the new home strip pays homage to England’s 1984 team, the first to compete at a major tournament. That side also played in a kit with a white shirt and blue shorts.

England have played in home kits with non-white shorts several times since. Recently, they played in navy shorts in their qualifiers for the 2019 and 2015 World Cups, as well as at the 2013…
