England captain Leah Williamson limped off in Arsenal’s Women’s Super League game defeat by Manchester United — with fewer than 100 days remaining until the World Cup.
Williamson, who lifted the Euros in the summer with England, went down after winning the ball in an innocuous challenge with Katie Zelem in the 11th minute. The Arsenal player appeared to have sustained a knee injury and was hitting the ground in agony as soon as she went over.
The 26-year-old was immediately tended to by Arsenal’s medical staff and a stretcher was called before she limped off.
Williamson’s potential injury comes at a crucial time in Arsenal’s season. Jonas Eidevall’s side play Wolfsburg away at the weekend in the first leg of their Champions League semi-final and are firmly in the WSL title race with a handful of games left to play.
Eidevall was asked about Williamson’s injury after the match, which finished 1-0 after a first-half Alessia Russo goal for United.
“We were forced to do a very early substitution on Leah, I think that disrupts us a lot,” Eidevall said. “It was in a position that we didn’t want to do a substitution early on so I think that put us in a difficult situation.”
