Emma Raducanu has once again 100 percent stood by her decision to miss the Paris Olympics as the 21-year-old believes it is “the right decision long-term” and also added playing on the hard courts of Washington is “a lot better option” than competing on Roland Garros’ clay courts.
In the first week of the grass season, it was revealed that the ITF offered Raducanu a wildcard for the Paris Olympics but she declined it. Then, British tennis officials said that Raducanu cited the constant surface change concerns as the reason for her decision.
When asked about it, Raducanu confirmed that it was true since she feared that going from grass to clay – and then from clay to hard courts in a short time – would put her in a risk of getting injured.
After withdrawing from the Olympics, Raducanu signed up for a WTA 500 tournament in Washington. And in her pre-tournament press conference, the 21-year-old Briton was asked what factored in her picking Washington over the Olympics.
“Yeah, I would say for me, staying on one surface is important. The change of surface isn’t the best thing for me right now. In the future, maybe it would have been,” Raducanu explained.
