Emma Hayes makes her United States women’s national team debut on the sideline on Saturday in the first of two friendlies against South Korea. Only two weeks ago she was busy winning her seventh league title with Chelsea FC on May 18. Just three days later she was on a flight to the United States for her new job as USWNT team manager. Everybody who’s even vaguely aware of women’s soccer knows she’s bringing an undeniable winning pedigree and extended coaching experience in Europe and the United States to the program, but what exactly can U.S. fans expect from the team on the field? Matches against South Korea on Saturday and Tuesday offer the first chance to see the squad ahead of this summer’s Olympics as the Hayes era officially kicks off.
With the Olympics just two months away, Hayes is practicing patience and process when it comes to getting involved with her new squad. “We have to go step by step. Focus on all the little processes that need to happen so we can perform at our best level. If we can perform at our best level, then we have a chance of doing things, but we got work to do,” Hayes said of fan expectations for the team winning everything always.
