Elina Svitolina acknowledged Ukraine is not the safest country to visit at the moment but noted that her home country is still the place where she “feels mentally safer than anywhere else in the world.” Svitolina, who is one of the most popular and successful Ukrainian athletes, has been outspoken in her support of Ukraine since the start of the Russian invasion.
After 28-year-old Svitolina gave birth to a baby girl Skai last fall, in February she returned to Ukraine for the first time since the start of the invasion. During her visit to Ukraine, Svitolina met with her family and friends but also with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and his wife Olena Zelenska.
In an interview with the PA news agency, Svitolina revealed that her husband Gael Monfils is “really worried” for her safety. “Of course it’s unsafe because the country’s in a state of war. I have to plan it really well with the safety measures and be careful always.
But mentally I feel safer in Ukraine than anywhere else in the world,” Svitolina told the PA news agency, via The Independent.
