Elena Rybakina has withdrawn from this week’s WTA 250 event in Eastbourne, citing the virus infection she contracted in Paris and “another small issue” sustained in Berlin. Rybakina, who was the top-seeded player in Eastbourne, was scheduled to play her first-round match today.
Since Wimbledon is starting next week, Rybakina decided to use the next couple of days to try to recover from the virus infection that also forced her to abruptly withdraw from her French Open third-round match. “Unfortunately, I have to withdraw here in Eastbourne today.
I am still recovering from the virus I had in Paris and after Roland Garros it was really tough. I also picked up another small issue in Berlin. So my team and I decided it would be better to recover this week and prepare for Wimbledon.
I wish the tournament here in Eastbourne a great week and I hope I can be back next year,” Rybakina said in a statement.
