After pulling out of the London Marathon 2023 just a few days before the race due to a knee injury, Scottish athlete Eilish McColgan has revealed further information about her difficult decision.
She expanded on her knee issue and explained that, while the injury was nothing serious, she was suffering with “swelling and an impingement under the kneecap [which had] become very painful”.
Eilish also acknowledged a ‘sponsor clash’ between herself and the London Marathon race sponsor. It is believed that she may have been referring to her partnership with nutrition brand Science in Sport and that she perhaps had plans to wear their logo during the race. The London Marathon 2023 was sponsored by Lucozade.
She went on to say in an Instagram post to her followers that things needed “to change to give athletes the chance to be financially stable”.
Race director Hugh Brasher has not directly responded to Eilish’s concerns about sponsorship, but hinted at further discussions about this issue with her, stating: “face to face conversations are always the best way to understanding.”
