Dominic Thiem admitted he was “hugely disappointed” after failing to secure a single win for Austria in their Davis Cup qualifiers tie against Croatia. This past weekend, Austria took on Croatia in Rijeka. On the opening day of the tie, Thiem suffered a 6-3 7-6 (2) loss to Borna Gojo.
The following day, Thiem was beaten by Borna Coric 7-6 (3) 6-2. With Coric’s win over Thiem, Croatia sealed a 3-1 win over Austria. “It’s a huge disappointment. Obviously my match today, but also the fact that I couldn’t help to give my team, my country a point.
We lost 1-3, I lost two points out of that, so it’s not a good weekend for me, so the disappointment is big right now,” Thiem said after Austria’s loss, per the Davis Cup website.
Thiem failed to send the tie into a deciding match
The Austrians found themselves 2-0 down to Croatia after the opening day of the tie.
Then in the doubles match, Alexander Erler and Lucas Miedler stunned Ivan Dodig and Nikola Mektic to cut Austria’s deficit to 2-1. Thiem then had a chance to send the tie into a deciding match but failed to deliver against Coric.
