Houston Dash forward María Sánchez is now the highest-paid player in NWSL. Houston signed Sánchez to a three-year, $1.5 million contract on Monday with an option for a fourth year. The deal shows the Dash’s confidence in Sánchez and a renewed ambition for the club, which has historically produced middle-of-the-road results.
“I know I’m going to have a big responsibility in these coming years, but I think it’s very exciting. I think it’s a challenge,” Sánchez told The Athletic. “I have high expectations for myself, and I think the club will too. It’s just very exciting that they had that trust in me, that they have that belief in me. My whole career has been based on people believing in me and making those types of bets on me.”
Sánchez has represented and captained the Mexican national team, including the 2015 Women’s World Cup. She is expected to join El Tri in the inaugural Concacaf W Gold Cup tournament next year.
