Russian tennis star Daria Kasatkina admits it is “unsafe” for her to return home after coming out as gay and opposing Russia’s actions in Ukraine. Exactly a year ago in 2022 July, 26-year-old Kasatkina came out as gay during a conversation with a Russian blogger in Barcelona.
During the same conversation, Kasatkina openly condemned the actions of the Russian government. At the time, Kasatkina knew her revelation and comments on the Russian government wouldn’t be taken well back home. Since then, Kasatkina hasn’t been to Russia.
But Kasatkina insists she has zero regrets over her actions.

“It’s unsafe for me now, with the regime we have. As a gay person who opposes the war, it’s not possible to go back.
But I don’t regret it even 1%. When the war started and everything turned to hell, I felt very overwhelmed and I just decided, ‘Screw it all.’ I couldn’t hide anymore. I wanted to say my position on the war and my [orientation], which was tough, coming from a country where being gay is not accepted, but it felt like I had a backpack of stones on my shoulders and I just had to throw it off.
