Dan Evans has seemingly responded to David Goffin and Iga Swiatek’s complaints about the French Open crowd as the British tennis player says it is “laughable” to call fans at Roland Garros “hooligans.”
So far this week, there has been a lot of talk about the French Open crowd and their behavior. Following a hard-fought 4-6 6-4 6-3 6-7 (4) 6-3 win over Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard on Tuesday, Belgian Goffin ripped the French Open crowd, saying that their behavior was “totally disrespectful” – claimed that someone spat out a gum at him – and that tennis will soon have “hooligans” in the stands if certain behavior is allowed.
“Clearly, it goes too far, it’s total disrespect. It’s really too much. It’s becoming [like] football, soon there will be smoke bombs, hooligans and there will be fights in the stands,” Goffin said after his opening win at Roland Garros.
“It’s starting to become ridiculous. Some people are there more to cause trouble than to create an atmosphere.
“Someone spat out their chewing gum at me. It [the match] was getting complicated. That’s why I wanted to stay calm. If I started to get angry about it, it could have destabilized me.”
