Running legends Dame Kelly Holmes and Jasmin Paris will be the official starters for this year’s London Marathon. Olympic gold medallist Kelly Holmes will be starting the elite men’s race, while Barkley Marathons victor Jasmin Paris will start the elite women’s race.
The women’s race will officially begin at 9:25am in Sunday, before the men’s elite race and the mass event kick off at 10am.
This year’s women’s elite field features three of the four fastest women in history, including world record holder Tigist Assefa of Ethiopia. It’s set to be an exciting battle for a new world record, with competitors aiming to beat the current 2:17:01.
After her historic performance in the Barkley Marathons last month, where she became the first woman to complete the gruelling course, Jasmin Paris feels a fitting starter for this incredible field of women.
“It’s a great honour to have been asked to start the women’s race at the TCS London Marathon,” Paris said. ”I’m excited to see some of the best marathon runners in the world take on the London Marathon this weekend – maybe we will even see a world record! ’
