Corinne Diacre sacked as France Women head coach months before World Cup

Corinne Diacre has been sacked as France Women head coach.

Diacre’s future was being discussed at a France Football Federation (FFF) meeting on Thursday and an official announcement soon after confirmed her departure.

The FFF said the “fracture” between players and hierarchy seemed “irreversible” and was “detrimental to the interests of the national team”.

The France team has been in turmoil since captain Wendie Renard led a group of players in standing down from international duty “until necessary changes were made” last month.

Renard said she could “no longer support the current system” and added that she would not play at this summer’s World Cup to preserve her “mental health”.

Team-mates Marie-Antoinette Katoto and Kadidiatou Diani later followed suit.

Issues between Diarce and the France players stretch back to before last summer’s European Championship.

Diacre’s position came under fire following Renard’s statement but the 48-year-old hit back at her critics on Wednesday ahead of the FFF meeting.

In a statement to AFP via her lawyer, Diacre claimed she has been “the subject of a smear campaign which is astonishing in its violence and dishonesty”.

FFF president Noel Le Graet had resigned last Tuesday amid a scandal over his conduct.
