Cori Gauff, Jessica Pegula survive first set scare to win doubles title

Cori Gauff and Jessica Pegula have won the Miami Open doubles title after beating Leylah Fernandez and Taylor Townsend. Gauff and Pegula, seeded at No 2, beat Fernandez and Townsend 7-6 (6) 6-2 in the Miami doubles final.

For USA’s Gauff and Pegula – the home favorite duo in Miami – it was their second doubles title of the year. Previously, Gauff and Pegula captured the Doha title in February. On the other side, Fernandez and Townsend fell just short of winning a title in their second-ever tournament as a duo.

How Gauff, Pegula defeated Fernandez, Townsend?

No break points were seen until the fifth game, when Gauff and Pegula saved a break point to go 3-2 up in the first set. After saving a break point, Gauff and Pegula had their first break points of the match in the sixth game but didn’t realize as Fernandez and Townsend tied the first set to three games apiece.

In the 11th game, the first break of the match was seen as Fernandez and Townsend opened a 6-5 lead and got themselves a chance to serve out for the first set. Serving for the first set in the 12th game, Fernandez and Townsend missed out on a set point as Gauff and Pegula managed to break back and force a tie-break.
