Coco Gauff finds herself one match away from immortality.
The 19-year old is putting the finishing touches on a US Open run for the ages. She’s left a trail of broken opponents strewn in her wake, advancing to the final with relative ease; Gauff’s quarterfinals and semifinals matches both ended in straight sets.
The 19-year old is one of precious few teenagers to reach this stage of American tennis’ crown jewel tournament. But she has bigger plans; Gauff is hoping to become the first American teen to hoist that glimmering silver vase since Serena Williams in 1999.
She’ll have quite the dance partner in Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka, the No. 2 player in the world. Sabalenka is a former Australian Open champion and one of the most effective servers in all of tennis. She showcased her impressive stuff in a comeback victory over Madison Keys in the semis, further indication of just how dangerous she can be.
The crowd will be on Gauff’s side throughout. But don’t think Sabalenka can’t cause some mayhem. Especially given that venomous serve.
