Coco Gauff offered some empathy for Caroline Garcia after the Frenchwoman received some horrifying messages on Instagram from angry bettors as the world No. 3 says stuff like this is definitely a huge issue but at least she has figured out a way how to deal with it.
On Tuesday, 2022 WTA Finals champion Garcia crashed out of the US Open in the first round after Renata Zarazua earned a surprise 6-1 6-4 win.
If losing so early at Flushing Meadows wasn’t already bad for Garcia, she had to deal with more bad stuff when she returned to her hotel and read DMs that were sent to her. And some of the insults were pretty terrifying as one even told the 30-year-old Frenchwoman to “consider killing yourself.” Another wished Garcia’s mom “soon dies.”
After revealing some of the messages she received, Garcia highlighted that while she is older and knows how to handle those things, she can never be fine with such hate. Also, the former world No. 4 added that she fears for the younger players and the impact it could have on them and also slammed tournaments that have deals with betting companies.
Following a 6-4 6-0 win over Tatjana Maria, Gauff was asked by reporters if she read about the Garcia case and if she had any thoughts on that.
