Coco Gauff makes commanding start with dominant 52-minute win

Coco Gauff made a commanding start to her French Open run as the third-seeded American dismantled world No. 208 Julia Avdeeva in just 52 minutes of play to safely progress into the second round at Roland Garros.

Gauff, the 2022 French Open champion runner-up, destroyed 21-year-old Russian qualifier Avdeeva 6-1 6-1, who was making her Grand Slam main draw debut.

Going into the match, Gauff was the huge favorite to beat Andreeva since her resume is well-known while the Russian – who has never been ranked higher than world No. 1888 – only played at the ITF-level tournaments this year before making it past the French Open qualifying.

And Gauff met the expectations as she routinely got the job done against Avdeeva to set up a second-round meeting versus qualifier world No. 131 Tamara Zidansek, who defeated Alison van Uytvanck in her opener. When Gauff and former world No. 22 Zidansek meet, it will be their first meeting.

Right from the start of the match, Gauff imposed her game and controlled everything as the American tennis star started the match with back-to-back breaks and a dominant 5-0 lead.
