Coco Gauff ends cooperation with coach Brad Gilbert after disappointing US Open run

Coco Gauff, currently ranked world number six, has ended her partnership with coach Brad Gilbert, just weeks after her unsuccessful US Open title defense. The 20-year-old American star, who won her first Grand Slam under Gilbert’s guidance last year, suffered a fourth-round defeat to compatriot Emma Navarro at this year’s tournament, prompting the decision to part ways.

Gilbert, a highly experienced coach who has worked with tennis greats such as Andre Agassi, Andy Murray, and Andy Roddick, expressed his appreciation for the journey he shared with Gauff. On social media, he stated, “Coco, at just 20 years young, your future is incredibly bright, and I wish you nothing but continued success ahead.” He also hinted at new coaching opportunities in the future, saying he was excited about the next chapter in his career.

Gauff initially brought Gilbert on board following a disappointing first-round exit at Wimbledon last year. This collaboration, along with Spanish coach Pere Riba, sparked a remarkable turnaround in her performance. Gauff won 18 of her 19 matches during the U.S. hardcourt swing, which included titles in Washington and Cincinnati, culminating in her career-best achievement – winning the 2023 US Open, where she defeated Aryna Sabalenka in the final.
