Coco Gauff felt she and her team “were not all in sync” during her Wimbledon round-of-16 defeat to Emma Navarro but refused to blame anyone other than herself for the loss.
After winning the 2023 US Open and also being a semifinalist at this year’s Australian Open and French Open, Gauff suffered her earliest Slam defeat since last year’s Wimbledon after No. 19 seed Navarro upset the second-seeded American 6-4 6-3 on Sunday.
When Navarro – who had an outstanding game plan and was perfectly executing her tactics – went 6-4 4-1 up, Gauff showed some real frustration as she emotionally pleaded with her team to give her some direction.
“Tell me something. You guys aren’t saying anything,” Gauff shouted at her coaches Brad Gilbert and Jean-Cristophe Faurel while waving with her hands.
But Gauff letting out her frustration that way didn’t change anything drastically as Navarro went on to routinely close out the match in two sets.
