Strava has released its annual report detailing the habits, motivations and preferences of users in 2023 – and, of course, there are both negative and positive takeaways.
A concerning statistic that relates specifically to women is a lack of safe space to exercise. Despite increasing awareness of women’s safety in the industry, women are still 9% more likely than men to cite safety concerns as an obstacle to working out.
Men, on the other hand, were 13% more likely to cite household responsibilities as a barrier to exercise.
Meanwhile, climate change had a noticeable effect on many Strava users’ habits; extreme heat impacted exercises plans for 75% of us, and poor air quality got in the way for 27%.
In more positive news, running reigned supreme as the top sport on Strava.
76% of users with pets said that they’re a big motivation and help get them out the door and 84% said that exercise, even when done alone, helped fight feelings of loneliness. So, if 2024 feels like the year to try canicross or join a running club, you’ll be in good company!
