Claudio Reyna resigned as Austin FC’s sporting director, the MLS side announced Thursday. Here’s what you need to know:
- Reyna has transitioned into a technical adviser role with the club to “ensure a smooth transition of responsibilities.”
- Coach Josh Wolff will become the team’s interim chief soccer officer and lead its sporting department, while director of player personnel Sean Rubio has been promoted to interim sporting director.
- The move comes three weeks after the revelation that Reyna’s wife, Danielle (also a former USWNT player), told U.S. Soccer sporting director Earnie Stewart — who also announced Thursday he is leaving his role — about U.S. coach Gregg Berhalter kicking his now-wife in 1991. Reyna also said he spoke with Stewart about his frustrations around their son, Gio, getting limited playing time at the World Cup.
