The self-proclaimed “G.W.O.A.T.” is back in action as Claressa Shields defends her undisputed middleweight title against late replacement Maricela Cornejo at Little Caesars Arena in her hometown of Detroit, Michigan.
Shields (13-0) was originally set to face Hanna Gabriels, but Gabriels tested positive for a banned substance and was subsequently pulled from the fight. Cornejo (14-5) steps in on short notice in what will easily be the toughest challenge of her career.
Cornejo last fought in March and earned a stoppage win over Sheila Cunha. The 35-year-old has faced limited opposition, with her toughest opponent being Franchon Crews-Dezurn, who defeated her twice.
Shields returns home after avenging the only loss in her life as a boxer ,when she defeated Savannah Marshall by unanimous decision in London last October.
Will Shields tighten her hold as the best pound-for-pound female boxer in the world or will Cornejo pull off arguably the biggest upset in women’s boxing history?
