Sam Perkins may have lost all movement due to the effects of Motor Neurone Disease (MND), but he’s determined nothing will stop him from completing this year’s London Marathon.
The 41-year-old has teamed up with four-time Ironman World Champion, and personal friend, Chrissie Wellington. She will lead a support team as they prepare to push Sam over 26.2 miles to raise funds and awareness for Sam’s charity Stand Against MND.
Improved inclusivity at London Marathon
Chrissie is keen to shine a spotlight on London Marathon’s efforts to promote inclusivity. One of the ways they are doing this is through a new ‘wheelchair assisted’ route, which was launched last year.
Organisers London Marathon Events made a number of changes to their entry policy in 2022 to help make the event more inclusive than ever. As part of this initiative, they now allow ten wheelchair-assisted athletes to take part.
The assisted wheelchair athletes are allowed a maximum of four people pushing them out on the course, with only two allowed to push the wheelchair at any one time.
For the 2023 event, Sam is one of the ten people who have been provided with an assisted wheelchair place. The initiative was first seen in the 2022 London Marathon back in October.
