The Kansas City Chiefs‘ quest to become the first NFL team to win three consecutive Super Bowls is on to the final stage.
Kansas City defeated the Buffalo Bills 32-29 in the AFC Championship Game on Sunday, clinching a berth in Super Bowl LIX. The Chiefs are the fourth team to reach three straight Super Bowls and the first to make the game after winning back-to-back Super Bowls, according to ESPN Research.
As hard as it is to win two titles in a row, a three-peat is a rarity among all major sports. Across the NBA, MLB, the NHL and the WNBA, there have been 14 instances when a team has won three straight titles. The Los Angeles Lakers from 2000 to 2002 are the last team to complete a three-peat.
There have been nine instances in NFL history when a team has won back-to-back Super Bowls — but no team returned to the big game in the following season, until the Chiefs did this season.
The Green Bay Packers were the first to go back-to-back in 1966 and 1967, while the Pittsburgh Steelers strung together two separate runs in the 1970s. The Denver Broncos and San Francisco 49ers each won consecutive Super Bowls in the 1990s. Only one franchise, the Bills, has reached the Super Bowl in four straight years, though it lost each time.
