Chelsea Women manager Emma Hayes wants authorities to clamp down on “tactical timeouts” after Arsenal goalkeeper Manuela Zinsberger went down injured three times during Sunday’s Conti Cup final.
Chelsea suffered a 3-1 defeat but as well as conceding her side played poorly, Hayes drew attention to something she perceives as a big problem across women’s football.
“Zinsberger took three timeouts during the game,” Hayes said. “That for me is a problem we have to solve across the league.
“That’s not just today. I said (it) to the fourth official. Surely in this game, we’ve gone past the point where we have these tactical timeouts with goalkeepers.
“They are things that I hope we get away from but you can do that when you’re 3-1 up.
“Arsenal could kill the game anywhere they did whether it was McCabe going down two or three times.”
Having taken an early lead through Sam Kerr, Chelsea lost the match 3-1. A Stina Blackstenius strike, Kim Little’s penalty and a Niamh Charles own goal had Arsenal in front at half-time and the north London side never looked back.
