Chelsea have opened talks with Thiago Silva about a new contract.
The Brazil international’s current deal expires at the end of the season but Chelsea want him to stay on for at least another 12 months.
Silva is still one of the most important players at the club and is a mainstay of the defence despite turning 38 last September.
The defender was asked about his future by The Athletic in October and revealed he wanted the situation resolved as soon as possible.
Silva, who has a wife and two sons living with him in England, said: “Of course, I need to know whether I will have a new contract with Chelsea, also for my family arrangements. It is not easy if I don’t have a new contract — I will have to decide what to do. I must involve my family. This is an important decision and so we will see what will happen.”
There is confidence that a deal will be agreed soon. Silva, who joined as a free agent in 2020 after being released by Paris Saint-Germain, was part of the squad which won the Champions League in 2021.
Meanwhile, negotiations with Lyon over the signing of Malo Gusto continue. Chelsea have had an opening bid for the 19-year-old rejected but haven’t given up hope of buying him before the window closes.
