If you’ve ever spent time resting from an injury, only to find that it appears again within weeks of restarting activity this article is for you. Our interview with tendinonpathy expert Dr Alex Nelson, is an important discussion of running with tendonitis and dispels common misconceptions.

Here you’ll find a summary of the Tread Lightly episode interviewing Dr Nelson. We recommend listening to the full episode, which is embedded at the end of the article, for additional details.

What is Tendonitis vs Tendinopathy?

Amongst athletes you’ll hear the term tendinitis tossed around. And if not, you probably have heard things like jumper’s knee or runner’s heel.

Terminology is really important and we’ll talk about that here in a second because tendinitis is often the diagnosis given to people who are battling tendon pain. And the suffix on the end with itis kind of leads people to believe that inflammation is kind of the hallmark sign of this injury and that the inflammation is the primary driver of their symptoms.

Which leads us down a path of trying to reduce inflammation through NSAIDS or ice or rest.

But that isn’t actually going to resolve the issue.

And now, the better term is actually tendionpathy. That way we aren’t confusing  maybe an acute injury…

We’re always sad to see the end of the Olympics looming. But tonight’s action on the track at the Stade de France will be replayed and remembered long after the Closing Ceremony. The Team GB women’s runners have put in an astounding effort, walking away with two more medals for their collection.

1500m final

First up was the women’s 1500m final, featuring two brilliant Brits: Laura Muir and Georgia Bell. A leading pack was quickly established, with Bell bringing up the rear as they put distance between themselves and the remaining competitors. Not one to be left behind, Muir picked up the pace to rejoin the pack. She easily slotted into 5th place behind Bell, in 4th, as they headed towards the final straight.

It looked like Team GB would just miss out on a medal place. But a sensational sprint from Bell had her crossing the finish line just ahead of Ethiopia’s Diribe Welteji. In addition to her well-earned bronze, she also set a new 1500m national record of 3:52:61.

We’re thrilled for Bell. She’s had an incredible journey, that only began a year or so ago. Up until 2023, running was all about “fun and fitness” for her. She loved running (an albeit speedy) parkun while working full-time in cyber-security. Her parkrun times caught the eye of Keely…

Emily Sisson is beaming. In a tank top and visor, from the front seat of her car. She’s graciously made time to video-call on her phone in between her morning run and a body work appointment in Phoenix, Arizona.

Such is the life of America’s fastest woman marathoner ever as she gears up to compete at the Paris Olympics on August 11.

This race is a long time coming for the 32-year-old who’s been a distance runner standout since setting a 5,000-meter high school national record of 15:48.91. After an astonishing opener at the 2019 London Marathon in 2:23:08, the second fastest debut for an American woman, her high school dream of becoming an Olympic marathoner felt within grasp. Three spots were up for grabs at the 2020 Olympic Trials in Atlanta, Georgia. And Sisson had the third fastest seed time by nearly a minute and a half over…

It’s hard to stay on top of the massive variety of running shoes being released to help us with speed, but today we’ve got a fun one without a carbon plate. This Brooks Hyperion 2 review will help you see if this training shoe should hit your rotation.

Brooks, as most of you probably know, is a popular running shoe brand known particularly for its Ghost, Glycerin, and Adrenaline models. Go to just about any race and you’re bound to see countless runners in one of those shoes. They’re longtime runner favorites.

But today, we’re going to dig into the speedier side of Brooks’ running shoe line and take a look at their Hyperion 2.

Run to the Finish Coach Lindsey took a pair of these for a test drive over a variety of speed sessions and a longer run. Lindsey is a 3:17 marathoner, so she knows what she likes when it comes to a shoe made for speed.

So let’s find out if the Brooks Hyperion 2 lives up to the hype or if another lightweight running shoe might be a better option.

Brooks Hyperion 2 Review

To be clear this is the Hyperion 2, not the Hyperion 2 Max. I know, these names are getting confusing, but basically at $40 more the Hyperion Max 2 is a…

As the 2024 Olympic Games wind down, the final weekend brings two of the most highly-anticipated races in Paris. The men’s and women’s marathon will take place on August 10 and 11, respectively. The races will not only be packed with fierce and fast competitors, but also history, heat, and humidity, plus some of the toughest hills in Olympic marathon history.

Hot, Humid, and Hellishly Hilly

Each race will include about 80 runners and start at 8 A.M. local time (2 A.M. ET) at Hôtel de Ville, the city hall in the center of Paris that dates back to 1535. Runners will make their way to the mid-17th century Palace of Versailles about 12 miles to the west before heading back to Paris and finishing at the Esplanade de Invalides, the circa 1706 golden domed complex that houses the tomb of Napoleon. Along the way, they’ll pass through nine…

Unless you’ve dealt with an injury in your upper leg or you’re spending more time in the gym strength training you might not have used these terms much. Which is why adductors vs abductors can leave us a bit confused, so we’re going to clear it up and understand what they do for your runs, plus how to strengthen them.

As a running coach, I’m interested in them because they occasionally relate to an injury and we want to resolve it. But also because understanding how to work your lower body is massively important for our goals.

Yes, there’s literally only a one-letter difference between the words but the muscle groups do opposite things.

The abductor and adductor muscles in your hips and thighs work together to allow side-to-side leg movements. Your abductor muscles move your leg away from the midline of your body, while your adductor muscles bring it back towards the midline.

Yes, training these muscles specifically is beneficial to you as an athlete, not just for bodybuilding.

So let’s dive a little deeper here into these important running muscles, what they do, common issues runners may have, and how to resolve them.

What are the Adductors?

The adductors are made up of the adductor longus, brevis, magnus, and minimus, as well as the pectineus, gracilis, and…

America, the search is over. Our next great sprinter superwoman has arrived.

Her name is Gabby Thomas, Olympic gold medalist in the women’s 200 meters. And her reign began just after the starting gun went off on Tuesday night inside a packed Stade de France.

Thomas burst out of the blocks, and the collective breath of American track fandom sighed. The curse of the bad starts that have plagued American sprinters in Paris was over. As her long, wavy ponytail popped up to vertical, it was clear even with the staggered start that she was toe-to-toe with the woman on her immediate right: Julien Alfred, reigning fastest woman in the world after winning the Olympic 100 meters just two days earlier.

That’s all Thomas needed.

Crossing the line 21.83 seconds later, a full body width ahead of the rest of the field, Thomas raised her arms on her…

Team GB’s hopes were high last night as track superstars Dina Asher-Smith and Daryll Neita were poised for a tense 200m final at the Stade de France.

After missing out on the 100m final, Dina’s hopes were pinned on a strong 200m race. Teammate Neita, who made it to the final but missed out on a bronze medal by a few fractions of a second, had unfinished business with new 100m Olympic champion Julien Alfred of St Lucia. Both Brit athletes had every reason to give it their all.

Asher-Smith came out as strong as ever, but couldn’t quite keep at full power in the final stretch. She came fourth with Neita following close behind in fifth, both runners performing fantastically.

Team USA’s Gabby Thomas, who has been running incredibly well all season, took the gold by some stretch after pushing ahead in the final seconds of the race. Fellow US athlete Brittany Brown joined her on the podium in third place while rising star Julien Alfred bagged herself a silver medal.

Alfred’s 100m gold and 200m silver are St Lucia’s first ever Olympic medals. On the other side of the coin, Thomas and Brown’s respective gold and bronze add to Team USA’s huge 2024 haul, securing their place at the top of the medal table.

Team GB have won their first gold medal in athletics at the Paris Olympics this evening – and it was Keely Hodgkinson who did it, with an astounding effort in the 800m final.

We had high hopes for Hodgkinson after she finished first in yesterday’s semi-final, and we know that she had gold in her sights. “I’m sick of silver!” she said. “I want gold.” Even watching her warm-up, it was clear that she was full of confidence and ready to run a tactical race.

She quickly settled at the front of the pack just after the 200m mark, and held her lead sometimes by just shoulder’s distance until they reached the final straight. At that point, she took off, leaving the rest of the runners in her wake as they sprinted to the finish line.

She crossed the line first with a time of 1:56:72, followed by Tsige Duguma of Ethiopia and Mary Moraa of Kenya.

We are absolutely chuffed for her. After winning silver at Tokyo, we know how much she wanted to get the gold – and get it she did.

We can’t wait to see how Team GB will do over the next few days of athletics – watch this space for more updates!

It’s less than an hour before the 400-meter semifinals at the U.S. Olympic Trials for track and field in Eugene, Oregon, and Kendall Ellis is in deep sh*t.

Literally.

Ellis found herself stuck in a porta-potty in the athlete area behind Hayward Field. For real. A brief moment of panic ensued when, as much as she jiggled the interior door latch, she couldn’t get out. It took a lot of banging and screaming until someone heard her and finally helped get her out. That unsavory situation would have rattled most. But Ellis, a two-time Olympic medalist—including gold in the women’s 4×400-meter relay in Tokyo—kept her cool. Once out on the track, she won her semi-final heat in a speedy 49.81 seconds, her first personal best time in six years.
