Defender and free agent Casey Krueger is headed to the Washington Spirit, according to two sources briefed on negotiations. The paperwork has not yet been completed, but the signing is in process.
While Krueger has earned a reputation as a defensively-minded outside back who can shut down opposing players one-on-one, her recent performances with the USWNT — especially in the Dec. 2 match against China — have reflected her ability to provide offensive support down the entire wing. That’s a promising match to help build up wide support for forward Trinity Rodman and attacking midfielder Ashley Sanchez.
A spokesperson for the Washington Spirit declined to comment on Wednesday.
The Spirit have largely been quiet so far this off-season, with the biggest piece of news coming from owner Michele Kang and her acquisition of the London City Lionnesses as part of her global, multi-club structure. The Spirit have yet to announce a new head coach either, after the departure of Mark Parsons in October.
Earlier this week, Relevo linked Barcelona head coach Jonatan Giráldez to the Spirit vacancy. Considering Barcelona’s complete domination over the past few seasons across La Liga and the UWCL, it would be a statement addition to the club here in the NWSL.
