Caroline Wozniacki was heard describing Indian Wells’ windy conditions as “impossible to play in” and Serena Williams’ ex-coach Rennae Stubbs chimed in by confirming that the Dane’s statement is pretty much true.
On Wednesday, Wozniacki – who ended her retirement after three and a half years last August – officially stepped on the court in Indian Wells for the first time since 2019. Playing against Zhu Lin, Wozniacki managed to win a very tight opener 7-6 (6) before the match was suspended due to rain.
“It’s impossible to play in this wind,” Wozniacki quipped during the first set.
Stubbs, who Wiliams specially hired for her final tournament at the 2022 US Open, agreed with Wozniacki by stating that Indian Wells is absolutely one of the most tournaments to play condition-wise. Stubbs, a former six-time Grand Slam doubles champion, won two Indian Wells doubles during her career – with Helena Sukova in 1993 and Lisa Raymond in 2002, respectively.
Responding to Wozniacki’s comment on X, Stubbs wrote: “4 of the windiest places on tour. Indian Wells, Miami, Eastbourne & Doha. Almost impossible to play at times in those places because of winds. I didn’t warm up…
