Caroline Wozniacki says she felt she was “close to winning” against Coco Gauff at the US Open and adds that performance is giving her confidence and belief ahead of the 2024 season. Wozniacki, who ended her retirement after three and a half years, was playing just her third tournament since coming back at the US Open.
After clinching a few notable wins beating Tatiana Prozorova, Petra Kvitova and Jennifer Brady, Wozniacki took on Gauff in the round-of-16. Although Gauff was considered the big favorite due to her form at the time and the fact that Wozniacki just returned to tennis, the American didn’t have an easy job as she was made to work hard before sealing a 6-3 3-6 6-1 win over the Dane.
19-year-old Gauff then went on to win the US Open title.

“(I) felt like I was close to win that match, but I still just missed a couple of things. I felt, in my game and physically, where I was like, I know where I need to go, I know where I am, I know where I need and want to be to be able to beat the best players in the world on a consistent basis, and that’s I think very encouraging that I wasn’t very far away.
