Caroline Wozniacki falls short of making big comeback in 2R after collapse

Caroline Wozniacki appeared to be heading toward another big comeback win at the Paris Olympics but then lost to Danielle Collins, while Iga Swiatek, Coco Gauff and Angelique Kerber all had winning days at the office.

After staging a stunning comeback on Sunday against Mayar Sherif and winning the match when the Egyptian was serving for a two-set win and having 30/0 on her serve, Wozniacki also found herself down by a set to No. 8 seed Collins before coming back to force a decider.

There, Wozniacki was 2-1 up and had an early break before suffering a collapse and losing the next four games. After losing four games in a row in the third set, there was no coming back for Wozniacki as Collins went on to complete a 6-3 3-6 6-3 win.and set up a meeting versus Camila Osorio.

Meanwhile, the two top seeds – Swiatek and Gauff – clinched dominant wins with an identical scoreline as the Pole dismantled Frenchwoman Diane Parry 6-1 6-1 while Gauff ousted Argentina’s Maria Lourdes Carle with also just one lost game in each of the two sets. 

But in the Gauff match, something quite interesting happened – the second-seeded American had nine winners and 28 unforced errors. Still, the 2023 US Open champion…
