The women’s edition of the 2025 Australian Open crowned a very surprising champion. On the eve of the first Grand Slam of the new season, everyone thought that the winner would be one between Aryna Sabalenka and Iga Swiatek.
Not only did neither of these two champions win, but both were victims of the same player. The title was lifted by Madison Keys, who played a truly amazing tournament at Melbourne Park and lifted the most important trophy of her career with full merit.
Only time will tell if it was just an isolated tournament, or if the 29-year-old American can aspire to become a contender for the other Slams in the second half of her career.
Keys was truly exceptional throughout the tournament, particularly in the semifinals and finals, where she started as a clear underdog. The American champion prevented Aryna from winning her third title in a row at the AO and showed that she is ready for the definitive consecration at the highest level.
During her amazing run, Madison defeated Li Ann, Elena Gabriela Ruse, Danielle Collins, Elena Rybakina, Elina Svitolina, Iga Swiatek and finally world number 1 Aryna Sabalenka, who hugged her and gave her sincere congratulations at the end of the final.
