Canadian women’s national team returns to training following job action, will compete in SheBelieves Cup

The Canadian women’s national team will return to training Sunday and will compete in SheBelieves Cup following their job action against Canada Soccer, the team said in a statement Saturday. Here’s what you need to know:

  • Representatives of the Canadian Soccer Players’ Association and Canada Soccer met Saturday afternoon for an hours-long meeting, discussing the concerns over significant cuts to national team programs less than six months in advance of the 2023 Women’s World Cup.
  • Canada Soccer threatened legal action against the Canadian women’s team if they did not return to work and commit to playing in Thursday’s game against the U.S. women’s national team in the SheBelieves Cup, the statement said. Canada Soccer would also collect millions of dollars in damages from the Players’ Association and individual players at camp, according to the statement.
  • The SheBelieves Cup starts Thursday. The FIFA Women’s World Cup begins on July 20.
