Canada Soccer: Women’s team budget cuts ‘were wrong’ but CSB deal good for organization

Appearing before Canada’s Heritage Committee, Canada Soccer representatives said the organization was “wrong” in thinking recent funding cuts to the women’s program would have a minimal impact but rebutted arguments that the deal with Canadian Soccer Business wasn’t good for the organization.

Additionally, the federation was questioned by members of the committee over its inability to reach a collective bargaining agreement with the men’s and women’s national teams.

Canada Soccer appeared before the committee following a year of protests from its men’s and women’s national teams and inquiries into one particular contract with an organization known as Canadian Soccer Business (CSB).

“We haven’t always been perfect,” Cochrane said of Canada Soccer in his opening statement.

On the subject of recent budget cuts to the women’s program, Cochrane said, “Recently, Canada Soccer made some funding decisions for the operations of the women’s team that we thought would have minimal impact. We were wrong. Those decisions were made with good intentions of controlling spending.”
